Wilson, Alexander (06/07/1766 - 00/03/1813) b. Paisley, Glasgow.

Biography After twenty years of living in Scotland, he became disillusioned there and decided to emigrate to America in May 1794, landing at Delware Bay. He soon befriended William Bartram, who had a fine library, and there he studied from his books, whilst carrying on with his teaching job. His ambition was to cover all the American birds and this started to come to fruition in 1806 when he met the publisher Samuel Bradford, who offered him the post of assistant editor of Abraham Ree’s Cyclopaedia. Wilson showed him some of his engravings and told him about his proposed book on American Ornithology. Bradford agreed to publish it in ten volumes, with ten colour plates in each. He traveleld widely to see more of the bird life. It was in Louisville that he met John James Audubon. He had covered 3000 miles in less than six months. In March 1813 the seventh volume was completed by Wilson. On returning to his home in Philadelphia he contracted dysentry and died four days later.

Wilson’s Storm-Petrel Oceanites oceanicus (Kuhl), Wilson’s Phalarope Phalaropus tricolor (Vieillot) and Hooded Warbler Wilsonia citrina (Boddaert) were all named in his honour.
