Biography Author of county avifauna of Yorkshire. Temperley (1951) says: 'The well-known ornithologist, T. H. Nelson, of Redcar, author of The Birds of Yorkshire (1907), living close to the Tees estuary, took a very keen interest in the whole of that area, on the Durham as well as on the Yorkshire side of the river. In his monumental work many references were made to occurrences in the marshes on the north side of the river and many notes on the bird life of the estuary as a whole. Several of these are quoted in this History.'

Biography Entomologist. Author. Editor. Under the pseudonym "Rusticus" he wrote his famous ‘Letters’. Born in 1801 of Quaker parents at Hampstead and was schooled at Painswick, Gloucestershire. He joined his father in his business of woolstapler in Godalming. From 1826 to 1837 he owned a rope-walk at Deptford, and then in 1840 he partnered George Luxford in printing at Ratcliff Highway, but Luxford soon retired, forcing Newman to move to Devonshire Street, Bishopsgate. He joined the Linnean Society in 1833. He was one of the founders of the Entomological Club in 1826, writing various papers on bird and insect life after which he founded the Zoologist in 1843 where he became Editor-in-Chief. Later, he became natural history Editor of The Field from 1858 to 1876. He also knew Mellersh who wrote on Gloucestershire birds.

While travelling in the Caucasus he discovered there were differences in the Pratincole species and hence the Black-winged Pratincole Glareola nordmanni Fischer was named in his honour.
