NOT PROVEN

0). 1900 Kent Near Westgate-on-Sea, two, seen, October.

(J. P. Nunn, The Times 3rd Dec., 1900; Eds., Ibis 1901: 158).

[H. Saunders, British Birds 1: 8; Hartert et al., 1912].

History In an Editorial (1901) in The Ibis, Vol. XLIII. p. 158, they say: 'In The Times of December the 3rd there is the following note from Mr. Joseph P. Nunn, of Royston, Herts.: - "At Westgate-on-Sea, early in October last, I saw two specimens of the Calliope camtschatkensis, or Ruby-throated Warbler, in their wild state. I had a very fine opportunity of seeing their beautiful plumage, and through the kind assistance of Professor Newton I have since been able to examine some skins. I have not the slightest doubt as to their identity, and I believe it to be the first recorded instance of this Warbler having visited the British Isles.'

Howard Saunders (1907) in British Birds, Vol. I. p. 8, under 'Additions to the List of British Birds since 1899', placing the record in square brackets, says: 'Two examples of the Siberian Ruby-throat, Calliope camtschatkensis, are said by Mr. Joseph P. Nunn, of Royston, to have been well observed by him near Westgate-on-Sea early in October, 1900 (cf. Ibis, 1901, p. 158). This is not enough to warrant the admission of the species to the British List, but Mr. Nunn's reputation for accuracy requires the courtesy of a record.'
