Biography Studied medicine at Uppsala University. On receiving his degree in 1785 he relocated to Eskilstuna, about fifty miles west of Stockholm, where he became the provincial medical officer for the next seven years. While attending some patients who were suffering from an epidemic of dysentry, he contracted it himself and died shortly after at the age of forty-nine.

J. F. Gmelin named the owl Strix Tengmalmi in 1788 believing Tengmalm was the first to distinguish it, but this has since been disproved. However, the vernacular has stuck.

Biography He started his museum in London in about 1760, costing £5,000 for his living and stuffed birds. The museum was said to be the best museum in Britain behind the one owned by Green at Lichfield and Latham’s at Dartford, Kent. In 1776 Tunstall had moved to Wycliffe on Tees, now Cleveland, where in a matter of five years he had a room constucted to house his collection. Thomas Bewick went to Tunstall’s museum to make drawings for his History Of British Birds (1797-1804) shortly after his death.
