Sabine, Edward (14/10/1788 - 26/06/1883) b. Dublin, Ireland.

Biography Educated at Marlow, Hertfordshire. President of the Royal Society (1861-71). Keen ornithologist. During July 1818 whilst on an Arctic Circle exploration with James Clark Ross they noticed some low rocky islands not far from Cape York and decided to investigate. Among the hundreds of Arctic Terns breeding there were some gulls with forked tails, dark heads and yellow-tipped bills. Several specimens were procured, transferred to a southbound whaler and conveyed to Sabine’s elder brother Joseph, in London. Joseph then displayed the birds at a meeting of the Linnean Society in mid-December whereby the gulls were named in his honour as Sabine’s Gull Larus Sabini, since renamed Xema sabini.

During the spring of 1855 Schwarz divided his men into three parties, one of which searched the upper regions of the River Amur. When the information from all of this collecting was published in 1863, it became clear there was a new species of warbler that had been found on 22 September 1856 in the Amur region. Radde named the species in honour of Ludwig Schwarz but it appears that Henry Seebohm was responsible for calling it by its common name Radde’s Warbler, the scientific name honouring the above Phylloscopus schwarzi (Radde).
