Biography Vicar. Brother of Gervase and W. C. Mathew. Author of The Birds of Devon (1892) and The Birds of Pembrokeshire (1894).

Having been compelled to resign the living of Bishop's Lydeard, in West Somerset, in consequence of long continued ill health, we were induced to settle in North Pembrokeshire on account of the healthiness of the climate; and were further led to select this remote part of the kingdom through anticipations of the sport to be enjoyed by its trout streams and on its moors. A time entirely given over to open-air pursuits was recommended as the best course to be adopted for the recovery of health, and we are thankful to state that this pleasant prescription met with entire success. Much of our eight years' residence in the county, which was not without its clerical duties, as we became curate of our small parish, was devoted to a study of its birds. All the noted bird resorts were visited, as well as the various collections of stuffed birds we could hear of within the county; while from numerous sporting friends, and from others with a taste for natural history, whatever information they were able to impart was sought after and noted down. We now present the result; although meagre, it may serve as the foundation upon which an ampler account of the birds of the county may some day be based.

He retired to Bristol, dying in 1908 at Brislington House. He is buried at Buckland Dinham.

At the Teesmouth, for many years, C. E. Milburn, of Middlesbrough (died 1933) and Joseph Bishop, of Stockton (died 1939) kept ceaseless watch over the coming and going of the various species that haunted that area and recorded many of its rarities.'

Biography Unreliable. His collection was auctioned in 74 lots at Yarmouth in September, 1853, but the bad state of preservation of many of them rendered them of little value. Specimens from his collection went to Castle Museum, Norwich.

Patterson (1905) says: 'Stephen Miller, a contemporary and friend of Smith [Librarian at Yarmouth], resided at Southtown, and was an enthusiastic collector. My stepmother, when I was a small boy, used to interest me greatly by her quaint descriptions of the birds whose cases she used to dust when a domestic in Miller's service, and of how his rooms and staircases were crowded with them.

"This celebrated collection", says Stevenson (vol. i. pp. 60-61), "...was sold by auction, at Yarmouth, in September 1853, subsequent to Mr. Miller's decease, but the bad state of preservation of many of the specimens unfortunately rendered them of little value." Amongst the rare birds in his collection described as "principally Norfolk shot" were the Bufflehead, Great White Egret, Little Egret, Roller, Black-winged Stilt, Night Heron, Squacco Heron, Ivory Gull, Scop's Owl, Snowy Owl and others, some of which can be traced to this day. Most of them, however, have utterly disappeared, and are probably destroyed. Mrs. Miller subsequently informed Mr. Rising, who made enquiries for H. Stevenson, that she "always understood from her husband that they were all British-killed specimens, and that the water birds, including the waders, were shot on or in the immediate vicinity of Breydon water." There were seventy-four lots sold, which produced what would now be considered very low prices; but some of these birds, sold thirty years after at Mr. Rising's sale, produced the high prices already mentioned.'

Biography Alfred Newton (1876-82 (2): 29) in Yarrell's British Birds, in a footnote says: 'In the Gentleman's Magazine for 1815 (lxxxv, pt. 2, p. 281) it is stated that Montagu died on the 28th August and in his sixty-fourth year, but the Editor learns from Mr. Cunnington (through the kindness of their common friend Mr. A. C. Smith) that the authority for the date and age here given in the text rests upon a manuscript by Montagu's daughter, Mrs. Crawford, and may therefore well be trusted.'

William Leach in 1816, recommended that the British Museum buy Montagu’s reference collection of British species at a cost of £1,200. By 1833 most of them were falling to pieces according to an inspection by MacGillivray; indeed it proved a poor investment.

Penhallurick (1978) says: 'Montagu was a Wiltshire naturalist of considerable merit. His Dictionary of British Birds (1802, Supplement, 1813), the first work of its kind, contains many references to Cornwall where he had friends and where he was on official military business from May 1796 to July 1797. The diary of his Cornish tour is preserved at the British Museum (Natural History). Soon afterwards he resigned his commission and settled at Knowle Cottage near Kingsbridge.
