Biography Eminent Ornithologist and author of The Birds of Great Britain (1862-73). Born in Lyme Regis in 1804. His father worked at what is now the Hotel Alexandra in Lyme Regis. By 1818 Gould jnr., had stuffed a pair of Magpies, which still exist at the British Museum - most stuffed birds before 1830 fall apart. In 1823 moved with the family to Guildford, Surrey, where his father became gardener at Windsor Royal Gardens. Shortly after he was sent to work for Sir William Inglesby at Ripley Castle in Yorkshire as a gardener. He worked there from 18th September, 1823 to 26th February 1825, when he moved back to London. Here he became Curator and Preserver for the Royal Society in Bruton Street. In 1825 he stuffed a 'thick-kneed' Bustard for King George, and five years later he stuffed a Giraffe just prior to the King's death. By 1833 he was now the Superintendent of the Ornithological Department of the Zoological Society. He lived at No. 12, and married Elizabeth Coxen in January, 1829, when they moved to No. 20. Correspondent of T. C. Heysham. See The Bird Man by Isabella Tree and Mearns & Mearns (1998: 144-150). Valued friend of William Yarrell and attended the same society meetings.

Biography Clarke (1912) vol. ii. pp. 242-243 in the chapter 'The Birds of St Kilda' says: '[Brünnich's Guillemot - Milner (Zoologist 1848: 2061) tells us that "Brünnich's Guillemot and egg" were taken on Soay on 15th June 1847. Milner himself was not one of the party visiting Soay, and it is impossible to say how far he was responsible for the identification of the bird. The notorious David Graham, of York, was with Mr (afterwards Sir William) Milner and his friends, and most likely it is to him that we are indebted for this and for some other questionable statements.]'
