Biography Rev. R. W. J. Smart, Transactions of the Penzance Natural History Society 1888: 170 says: 'In Morris's British Birds (Vol. v. p.35) it is stated that a Little Ringed Plover was shot at Scilly by Mr. J. B. Ellman, of Lewes. Neither Mr. F. Jenkinson or the present writer have ever heard of this; nor does Rodd notice it, or indeed know of it, as he calls a second, which he quotes, "The one Cornish specimen.'

He was one of the original members of the Berwickshire Naturalists Club, for some time its secretary, and its president in 1835, 1846, 1855 and 1856.
